LABORATORY TESTING
As the Dietary Supplement and Pharmaceutical industries continue to grow, the best insurance against consumer-related problems is the effective analysis of raw materials for safety and purity. Our goal at NLI is to provide our customers with a completely integrated manufacturing and laboratory testing facility that offers the highest quality services.
Product quality starts with well-researched product innovations. Whether we partner with you to verify the quality of an existing product, improve current products or expand an existing product line, we have laboratory services available to assist you with your research and development projects.
In accordance with cGMPs and your desired end-product goals, our experienced Product Research team will work with you to fine-tune a formula that meets your criteria for activity profile, performance, cost, marketing objectives and stability.
NLI maintains four separate laboratories. Select an option below to learn more:

Analytical Laboratory Services
Laboratory testing of raw materials is a cost-effective step to ensure you and your consumers receive finished products that meet label potency requirements—based on physical characteristics and active concentrations. To ensure that raw materials meet your specifications, we can provide several analytical tests including:
- HPLC – High Performance Liquid Chromatography
- TLC – Thin Layer Chromatography
- UV/VIS Spectrophotometer
- FT-IR – Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer
- Gas Chromatography
- Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AA)
- Inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP)
- Stability Studies
- Dissolution
- Titration
Microbiological Laboratory Services
NLI offers high quality microbial testing services to ensure the safety and quality of your raw materials, in-process samples and finished goods. Our Microbial Laboratory management adheres strictly to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) referencing the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), the FDA Bacteriological Analytical Manual and Official Method of Analysis of AOAC International pharmaceutical standards for consumable products. Our growth media preparations are prepared in-house, ensuring quality control and lot traceability.
NLI currently offers the following microbial testing procedures:
- Standard Plate Count
- Anaerobic Bacteria Count
- Yeast and Mold Count
- Salmonella (Presence, Absence and Confirmation)
- E. coli (Presence, Absence and Confirmation)
- P. aeruginosa (Presence, Absence and Confirmation)
- Staphylococcus aureus (Presence/Absence)
- Gram Stain
- Water Activity
Physical Characteristic Inspection & Testing
Physical laboratory testing is standard protocol for all incoming raw materials and ingredients at NLI. All data is accurately recorded, and specifications are established for each raw material on each test performed.
We maintain a database of test results on all lots that enter our operation. The database allows us to review historical trends of materials received. Reviewing historical trends facilitates accurate formulation estimates and ensures that materials can effectively be formed into specified finished products.
To that end, we provide the following physical characteristic tests for all ingredients:
- Organoleptic characteristics – Appearance, Smell and Taste as appropriate
- Density – Bulk and Tapped
- Moisture (Loss on Drying)
- Flowability Index
- Particle Size Determination
Finished products are formulated and tested to pass the following physical tests:
- Hardness
- Friability
- Disintegration
- Weight Variation
Research & Development Support
NLI knows that research and discovery are the driving forces behind great ideas and great products. Many opportunities in the Dietary Supplement and Pharmaceutical industries are contingent upon developing unique and proprietary products and processes.
NLI’s Research Support specialists can help you:
- Adjust formulas to provide therapeutically improved products
- Find new uses for existing products
- Research natural alternatives to common synthetics
- Identify raw materials with higher concentrations of active compounds
- Source raw materials with more consistent qualities
- Analyze ingredient options to lower processing and material costs
NLI is also able to provide complete prototype production on directly scale-able equipment. This makes it possible to troubleshoot and refine formulas as needed before committing to a full-scale production run.
Our researchers strive to keep themselves educated on current health trends and stay a step ahead of industry demands. Let us know when you hear suggestions and requests from your customers. We may already have a solution in mind that would fit well with your existing line.
We have partnered with universities and other research groups in an effort to expand the scientific knowledge required for developing proprietary products and processes, with a core research focus in natural products and medicinal plants. Our research ranges from exploring the effects of certain growing methods to examining how actives work in synergy with each other.
